AQUAMARINE

Aquamarine, the gem of the sea, is named with the Greek word for sea water. The reference is obvious: aqua sparkles like the sea and it color is pale to medium blue, sometimes with a slight hint of green. Aquamarine is the birthstone for March.

Aquamarine is a durable and lively gemstone that is appropriate for all jewelry uses. Its pale fire is flattering to most skin tones: even if you are not a mermaid, you will want to add it to your treasure chest.

Aquamarine has been the traditional birthstone for the month of March with bloodstone as an alternate. Aquamarine is also recommended as a gift for couples celebrating their nineteenth anniversary. Aquamarine got its name from "Sea Water" and ranges from pale blues to dark blues to greenish blue in color.

Aquamarine is said to re-awaken love in long-married couples and signify the making of new friends. To wear Aquamarine would bring love and affection. The ancients believed the gemstone imparted courage to the wearer, help in winning disputes and protect from slander, cured laziness, and quickened the intellect.
Brazil produces the finest aquamarines. Other regions of origin include North America, Western Africa, Russia, Madagascar, India, Zambia, Mozambique, Angola, Nigeria, and other countries
In an aquamarine, the deeper and clearer the blue color, the more valuable the stone. Stones weighing over 10 carats with fine color and clarity are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive.

Aquamarine, with a Mohr rating of 7.5-8, is less brittle and more durable than its green counterpart emerald. However, its color fades quickly as dirt accumulates on the stone; it must be cleaned to maintain its beauty.

Clean your aquamarine with warm water and a soft bristle brush. Do not expose your aquamarine to salt water, harsh chemicals, or sudden temperature changes.
